At first I really liked this mouse and the scroll wheel too. You can press it from side to side, but unfortunately this function isn't configurable like other keys (why?), so it only scrolls horizontally (which you'll rarely, if ever, use). No mouse pad is required, tracking is good, buttons work well, and the small form factor is good. Unfortunately, the soft rubber tire on the scroll wheel wears out over time and eventually ruins the center button. First, the rubber itself sticks to dirt and debris, and cleaning only aggravates the situation (lint from towels). Over time (several months), the texture becomes rough and small pieces of rubber fall off. It then loosens (stretches I think) and pulls away from the wheel, preventing the wheel from turning and properly clicking. The only solution is to cut the rubber and use a bare wheel (inconvenient but works).
