To be honest it works by itself when the 24 hour timer is on. My favorite setting is the color of the sunset! My fish love waking up to this and I really like how it starts to get very dark so their eyes get used to it until it gets lighter every hour until the next color. Such a great feature and great light. The suction cups seem to work fine but I just added an extra suction cup in the middle and it works great! It's been about two months.
