The slots in the arms don't engage the retaining ring ribs as securely as I had hoped. There are a number of things in a VW Jetta setup that affect full rotation such that it takes multiple engagement-disengagement-engage cycles to fully disengage the ring. What worked for one diametrically opposed pair of ribs didn't necessarily work for everyone. Indeed, on reassembly, keeping the tool engaged without threading the plastic ring onto the threads of the steel tank was a major problem.
