I grow and trim my beard all the time and it has been about 4 months since the last trim. I don't use wax to do something very stylized, I rather use it to train my mustache so the hair doesn't completely cover the mouth like a walrus. There are recommendations for heating it to soften it, using water, putting it in your pocket, etc., but I find the only way to use this wax effectively is to scrape it off a bit with a pick and rub between my fingers to soften it. I apply it to my mustache and use a comb and blow dryer on low heat to style it, then press the cool button on the blow dryer to set the wax a bit. If you want to do something crazy with a high hold I would use that as a base and put something stronger on top.
