Only the handles of the knives protrude beyond the holder. The blades are fully attached to the tree.

I bought these to fit all my large kitchen knives. Since both sides can be used, I also get a steak knife and scissors. It stands upright so it doesn't take up too much space on the table. I had to return the previous one because the slanted one took up more space. I'm tall, but the knives pull straight out. No sharp edges like hanging magnetic strips. Its width at base is 4 inches, height 9 1/4. It's 15 inches tall and the handles of my largest knives protrude.
