Almost from the start my Synology DS918+ was unstable and often froze for no apparent reason. Eventually it got to the point where the storage pool would fail and no volume would be available. I opened a support ticket and they asked me to run several memory tests, each lasting several hours. Finally, after several anxious days, the support engineer was able to SSH into the NAS and rebuild the array, saving all my data. The specific reason for the failure is that the RAID superblock got corrupted on all 4 drives, most likely because the NAS was locked and had to go through it hard many times. culprit? Third party RAM. To save a few bucks I bought two Crucial 8GB SODIMMs for NAS use. Memory tests revealed a variety of memory-related problems. No errors were found after replacing two non-original RAM modules with the supplied memory test three times. So, lesson learned. Is this Synology storage expensive? Yes. But you get what you paid for. My attempt to save a few bucks cost me days of worry and hours of storage testing and an SSH session that luckily recovered my data. Also, using non-Synology RAM modules is NOT supported. Synology's technology was good enough to help me anyway. In addition, if non-Synology RAM causes damage to the NAS motherboard, RAM slots, etc., your NAS warranty will be void.
