Review on Sling Media AirTV: Stream Local Channels to TVs 📺 and Mobile Devices with Built-in DVR Capability, Perfect for Sling TV by Daniel Drury

I bought this to record local TV and play it on my TV and phone when I'm not at home. I love that you don't need a subscription to get TV data and it's pretty easy to flip through the channel guide to record. Once the footage is recorded, the interface is easy to view and uninstall programs. It would be nice if fast forward had some preview, but jumping about 30 seconds into the future works well enough. When everything works, it's great. Sometimes the app crashes and you have to restart it to keep the video from being distorted, but mostly it works. However, it has some oddities. For example, you don't have the option to record all episodes of a particular show from iOS if it doesn't have an episode number, but you do have the option to do so through the FireTV app. It's annoying for newscasts, but I'm glad to see it's possible somewhere. Account management is also a little annoying. Currently, you can only use the DVR with the SlingTV app and only on certain platforms, with the exception of tvOS. Once you've registered a device to an Airtv account, you must unlink it from that account in order to register it with SlingTV. A hard reset didn't work to get it into the SlingTV app. Note on the SlingTV app: although I was able to get it working on iOS without an active subscription (create an account and not buy a plan), I had to sign up for a trial to get it working on my FireTV stick. In general I am very happy with them. I don't know of anything better, especially for free, than Airtv.
