Works perfectly. Will be used on other tables again

We used to have a table from IKEA that worked great. However, it was too big for our small kitchen/dining area. It was difficult to find a table of the right dimensions for our needs. Most offers on the Internet were either too big or too small. I stumbled across these legs and thought it would be easy to make my own table out of them. I bought a sheet of more expensive 4' x 8' Baltic birch for $80 and cut it to size. I actually had enough wood to make a second table and desk shelf organizer. I sanded the wood with 120 grit sandpaper until everything was square and flat. I used Varathane's Kona gel paint. I wiped the stain off with a soft, heavy-duty commercial paper towel. I rubbed it until the excess stain disappeared and the finish was even. 24 hours after applying the stain, I used a small, thin paint roller to apply Behr's glossy, water-based, quick-drying polyurethane. I spread it out evenly and did a new layer every hour. After three coats I waited 48 hours for the polyurethane to dry and hard enough to sand. I sanded it slowly and lightly with 800 grit sandpaper in the grit direction only. After the surface was smooth again, I removed the dust with a microfiber cloth and then applied a final coat of Behr polyurethane. Let it dry for another 2-3 days and then you will have a table like the one I have in the picture. It was very easy to make, and yet it was cheaper than buying a new table anywhere else, including IKEA.

Pros
  • Perfect for outdoor activities
Cons
  • Mostly good but...
