Review on Wireless Graphic Drawing Tablet With 8192 Pen Pressure And 12 Press Keys - HUION WH1409 by Tim Knain

Revainrating 4 out of 5

A great (but not perfect) alternative to Wacom Intuos 3!

Just received my Gigantor yesterday (yes, I realize that's not the model name but that's what I am going to call it). I installed drivers from the website, as that's usually the most current version with any given product. I would recommend letting the tablet and pen charge for a few hours before attempting to use them. I can't be certain, but I think the jumpy/laggy stylus response I initially experienced was due to a low pen charge. After charging, the lag went away. After plugging in and checking out the software to see what customization options were available, I gave it a whirl in Painter. There wasn't really any difference that I could tell in terms of performance between the Gigantor and Intuos 3 while dragging the stylus around on the tablet, nor did I expect a "real world" usage difference in spite of the doubling of sensitivity. The primary reasons I bought this tablet are because of the size and wireless feature. In terms of size, the working area is no less than double what my Intuos 3 had, at less than half the price from several years ago (see comparison in pic). The price point for an equivalent Wacom today is pretty much the same, about $400. For the value and equivalent functionality, this product gets 5 stars. The drop in star (really only half a star, but Best Buy doesn't have that option) is from the perceived lagginess when the tablet is used in wireless mode. While using the tablet in wireless mode with Painter (really, the only app I am using the tablet with), it seemed that there was a pause in the stylus response of half a second or so. Once it registered the input, it tracked as expected. I honestly don't know if this is a behavior of the tablet in wireless along with Painter's occasional odd brush tracking fussiness or not. I will continue testing to see if the same issue appears in Photoshop or any other app.Overall though, this tablet is an exceptional value, and a viable alternative to those of us who can't continue to keep up with the fiscal requirements of Wacom's gear. If you have REASONABLE expectations about what this tablet is and isn't, you will be very satisfied with this purchase.Also. anyone wanna buy a used Wacom Intuos 3? :-)
