My 10 year old son has a single speed Tony Hawk BMX bike from a department store and the standard chainring was a ridiculously large 44T which was too big for him, to climb hilly roads here in our area where we have a 250 ft elevation profile. One of the reasons I bought it for him was the three piece crank that allows you to change the sprocket. He was so frustrated on it the day he wanted to ride with dad so I did a fast gear ratio with 16T on his rear wheel compared to the gears I use on my bike and I felt like 28T would be the perfect compromise for him Climbing gear but the gear ratio is quite high for accelerating on the flat My son loves to go fast My calculations turned out to be right - the perfect gearing for his kl a leg! The first day he climbed the hills right next to me and the smile on his face is a memory I will remember forever. The upgrade was really easy to do. His bike has a three piece crankset so all I had to do was remove the crank arm from the sprocket side and the cog just slipped off the hub. The front sprocket is keyed and held in place by a crank and pinion. This new gear fits like a glove. The build quality is top notch - it looks like it's made from a solid block of aluminum alloy with a beautiful gold anodized finish. Looks so tricky on his Tony Hawk, Homer!
