They are of fairly good quality, made from stamped sheet steel and powder coated. The color coding (green is good, red is bad, amber is maybe) is a nice touch. But the thing is, you probably don't need them. The only reason I can think of it is if you are an oil change/service technician and want to be able to report a reproducible thickness measurement on a service ticket/report. If you're making your own brakes, the only judgment you have to make is "a lot of meat" versus "oh-a-little-thinner-better-technology-change". Also if you want to compare with a 4mm threshold you can simply cut a strip of cardboard to the correct width as a gauge. It only makes sense if you do it repeatedly like it's your job. . Still, after a few weeks you'll appreciate the thickness and be able to cut your own strips of cardboard that will last so long. However, it only costs $10, is colorful, and gives you something to slip into your toolbox. for those office duties, so I won't blame you if you want to get one, as of course I did.
