I have two of these, one in my home office and one in my office. The home office device was about 2 years old and started generating a "device error" every 60 seconds as the computer screens turned on and off and the computer "rediscovered" the device. I replaced the USB dock and the new one is fine again. So in my cases the lifespan of one of these devices was about two years. I left it plugged in constantly for two years, I didn't systematically turn it off every night. It drives two monitors with DVI connectors and my home monitors are VGA/DVI not HDMI so that works fine for me. (If I had HDMI monitors, you could get DVI-to-HDMI cables pretty easily.) Some newer universal docks have mostly HDMI outputs. I like having a docking station, but as a last resort I found that my 2016 Lenovo X1 laptop can drive two monitors very well, one via an HDMI port and the other via a mini-DVI port. If needed, it can be upgraded with a $15 USB hub for additional features like a scanner. However, I voted with my wallet and exchanged the docking hub. I've also used a very basic USB based monitor connection box (J5Create JUA311) with no video speed issues for regular office software. The Lenovo USB 3 Docking Station can be a bit buggy. Sometimes my laptop goes to sleep and when it wakes up the monitors won't turn on until after a cold boot.
