Review on πŸ“· Samsung SCM105 MPEG4 Sports Camcorder - Discontinued Manufacturer's 10x Optical Zoom by John Brazington

Bad function layout. Choose Sanyo Xacti instead

I've tried several digital camcorders to find the best way to go straight to DVD without tape. Samsung Miniket SCM105S is far from the best. Photography is limited to 1.2 megapixels. (Xacti 3.2, 4 and 5) With the available formats you can't (perhaps) record the highest quality MPEG files on an external Memory Stick Pro. In the internal memory (approx. 495 MB) DVD quality can only be achieved for around 10 minutes. Also, external storage is limited to 1GB. (Not so with the Sanyo Xacti, which accepts MPEG4 on SD cards up to 4GB for about 2 hours and 20 minutes of near-DVD quality video.) The buttons are also too small. You must have baby fingers and great dexterity to coordinate your filmmaking experience. The normal grip position blocks the lightning port. major design flaw. (The Xacti's buttons are comfortable and intuitive to place. The flash is positioned correctly.) Last but not least, the AVI video format is a weird version that Windows MediaPlayer doesn't like. There is a software workaround that is similar to trying to scrape your elbow behind your back. You can use Samsung as MP3 player. But it's far wiser to have a cheaper standalone MP3 player that can take a little abuse than to use it in a camcorder that costs at least $400. Maybe convenient, but stupid. A nice feature is the 10x optical zoom combined with anti-shake. It makes good videos on limited internal storage. (The 4- and 5-megapixel Xactis have anti-shake technology with 5.8x optical zoom.) Nuff said.

Pros
  • Portable Storage Device
Cons
  • Hard to say
