Review on ๐Ÿ”ด StarTech.com M.2 to U.2 Adapter - High-Speed PCIe NVMe SSD Converter - Red by Eric Cortes

Useless product as far as I can tell

I pulled a couple of 250GB NVMe SSDs from Dells. I decided to reuse them for some older computers without NVMe slots, so I bought one of these for testing purposes with the intention of connecting NVMe drives to the SATA ports of older computers. Lo and behold, they don't have standard SATA connectors, they have SFF-8639 connectors commonly used by SAS (server oriented) drives. So forget about connecting them to standard SATA controllers; You need to connect the RAID controller with the SFF-8639 drop cable. What is particularly annoying is that while SATA drives are compatible with SFF-8639 cables, SFF-8639 drives are not compatible with SATA cables. That means if this adapter had a SATA connector you could use it with SFF-8639 cables AND SATA cables, but since it's an SFF-8639 it will only work with SFF-8639 cables. To be honest, not sure if this adapter will work for my needs is entirely my fault. My one star rating is because I can't think of a practical reason to build an adapter that just won't work with SATA cables and only SFF-8639.
