The pad isn't that good, but I think it could be for the safe side. I have a pillow to prevent flat head instead, but THIS BED IS AWESOME. It takes up most of the space when I put it in the crib, meaning she can use it for months or even up to a year if need be. Ties help create a cozy space. My daughter knocks in it, she feels so comfortable. It doesn't overheat and it never makes me nervous about SIDS/choking. This is the best alternative to the overpriced docking station. And seems softer than a Dock-a-Baby. The material is decent and if it goes bad in the washing machine it's cheap enough to buy another. It seems normal if washed properly as a delicate wash or even by hand.
