Review on APC Protector SurgeArrest Essential PE63 by Scott Goff

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Superb Electronics

I bought this about a year ago. The problem with evaluating devices like this is that you'll never know if they work properly! Unfortunately, I had the opportunity to check the value of such a network filter. I have all my computer equipment (PCs, monitors, modem, routers, external hard drives, etc.) connected to two of these. But my printer, which was across the room, wasn't there. Last fall we had blustery, thunderous weather with power surges, blackouts, half-second blackouts and finally a total blackout that lasted several hours. When the power finally came back, all my devices worked fine except for the printer. At first it came on sometimes, but after a few days it stopped. It was the only computing device not plugged into an APC surge protector. I'm very skeptical about coincidences. The deciding factor had to be APC, or rather the lack of it. My only criticism is that I wish APC had rotated the outlets 90 degrees in the surge protector housing and spaced them a little further apart. This would account for the transformers my external hard drives, router, and cable modem use. Instead, I have to waste outlets or use short extension cords designed for the purpose. If I could take half a star off for that I would, but it's not worth a full star. Highly recommended.
