Review on πŸ’¨ KOOTION External SSD 250GB: High-Speed Portable Solid State Drive with 500MB/s Read and 450MB/s Write by Jared Winebrenner

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Cute, small and easy to use.

I bought this portable SSD because I play a lot on PC and never tried it with a portable SSD. I have two 512GB M.2 NVMe SSDs. One is Gen 3 and the other is Gen 4. I also have two regular SATA SSDs. One is 256GB and the other is 512GB. So I used different internal SSDs. This disc is very small and looks very nice. I connected it to my PC via USB 3.2 Gen 1. It showed up immediately. I went into storage settings and reformatted the drive to NTFS as I had no plans to use it on anything other than my Windows based systems. It worked without any problems, super easy. It looked like any normal internal drive with a drive letter and I named it Portable with drive letter P. I installed a few games on it and had no problems. Seems to work great and looks good. I intend to use it as if it were an internal SSD, maybe with a few small games, a few backup files and a few videos. Overall I think this is a good little SSD. I have no problem with the actual product. Everything worked great, it was very easy and the drive looks physically beautiful. In terms of hard drive performance, it was faster than advertised, at least for me. It takes 350 reads and 200 writes. I got almost 400+ reads and 260 writes. The temperature was checked via HWinfo. I'm not sure if they were correct because whether the drive was just lying on the surface or being actively cooled by one of my extra fans, the temperature never changed and stayed at 45C. So the product is very good all round. My only issue with the drive is the price of the smaller size. $25 for 60GB is too much. You can get a good 512GB internal SSD for 50-60 and even a good NVMe M.2 Gen 3 for 65-70. I guess you're paying for it to be portable, but still. 19.99 for 60GB and 39.99 for 250GB would be better. The price of 79.99 for the 500GB version is acceptable as it is portable and also offers 500 read/write at this size. 1TB for 129.99 is fine too. It's just that the smaller 60GB and 250GB drives are overpriced anyway. Price aside, the product is nice and easy to use and performs better than advertised. If you need a portable SSD, I recommend this drive as a good choice in 500GB+ at the current price.

Pros
  • Regular price
