I work from home and just got a new laptop from work. In order to continue using my 20-year-old HP LaserJet 4L workhorse (unmatched quality. HP no longer makes printers of this quality), I needed a USB-to-parallel adapter. I was familiar with the Tripp-Lite name and had read good reviews here, so I didn't mind paying over $20 for quality. Out of the box I connected the Tripp-Lite cable to the laptop and installed the Windows drivers. It showed it as an unknown device. So I connected the other end to 4L. Nothing. I then unplugged the USB end and plugged it back in. After a few minutes, Windows found and installed the 4L drivers. This might just be easier if I connected the printer to the cable before plugging in the USB connection. Update: I no longer recommend this product. It's a good quality cable, but Windows 7 and my printer just don't like each other. With this connection, the printer/printer connection was unreliable at best. It was constantly disconnected or became inaccessible. After suffering from this for a few months, I decided to look for HP JetDirect on this well-known auction site. The $20 used JetDirect is super reliable and allows me to use my old printer over a TCP/IP connection with all my modern computers.
