A small plastic ring that prevents unfolding is the only protection. It already has parts of what it collected along the way (these are not airtight boxes). It also has an odor which I can't tell if it's part of the product or coming from a hole in the corner of the box. If you're using them to work in the garage or clean up the mess this probably won't be a problem, but we bought them to use as placemats as we figure it's doable since it says 'kitchen' . However, texture means we can't. It's really rough, like homemade paper. It seems to absorb. The lack of protection for a "biodegradable" product is alarming.
