I wasn't aware of a specific way to lock the controllers and thought my product was defective. It turns out that if all of the controllers aren't facing outwards, you might not be charging your Joy-Con properly and having trouble shutting it down. It also resulted in one of the light towers always being red, which I assumed meant the charging station was faulty. Once I installed them properly everything has been great ever since. So if you're having red lights and connection issues, make sure you place your controllers the way I drew it.
