The Android spec indicates that ordering LRGM (from the note) is REQUIRED and LRMG is optional but highly recommended. In addition, the headset detection sequence must be implemented. This is documented at https://source.android.com/devices/accessories/headset/jack-headset-spec.html. I have the Element and I established which connections it was by plugging a male to male TRS cable into the mic/headphone jack. . Referring to the connection at the connector as TRRS (Tip, First Ring, Second Ring and Shield), I measured the following continuity. TRRS->MIC(TRS)T----->No connection (R open)R---- ->No connection (R open)R----->S (only corresponds to ground/ground) S - ---->T (only, corresponds to microphone signal)TRRS->HEADSET(TRS)T ----->T (only, left equivalent)R----->R (only, right equivalent )R -- --->S (only, Equivalent to Common/Ground)S--- --> No Connection This corresponds to Android's requirement that the connection order should be L, R, G, M. If you're using a studio/PA XLR mic, you'll definitely need a preamp (like the TubeMP), other mics (like on a standard headset) probably don't. I found the StarTech cables to be generally reliable and well made, as did this one. Hope that helps.
