Doesn't work well with my Cricut

My Cricut is popping out of this material - shards and bits everywhere. I bought this wood based on all the Cricut reviews praising it. But it took me 3 sheets of wood, a few cuts because the knife blade got stuck, 2 different blades (the first one wasn't a Cricut brand), 2 heavy mats, and a resize to finally get a normal cut. I don't make complicated cuts - just letters in thick lines, but the blade hits the wood in some places and doesn't cut through in others. I'm not sure if wood is best for Cricut, but maybe it's just me.
