The entire old line of hickory knives and tools are made from 1095 carbon steel, they are well tempered and probably the best deal in the world.. . the world. Cutting tools for those who know how to sharpen. I bought this cleaver to turn into a craft knife because the cleaver is a little thicker than the old hickory butcher knives. I haven't been (and have never been disappointed by them). For those who don't know, carbon steel will tarnish and rust if not properly cared for. their vinegar, which allows them to darken to an acid black color, which helps prevent deeper corrosion in use. Can I recommend these knives to people? Of course this cleaver is a solid tool, it's made the way a knife should be made - hard and strong steel that holds the razor blade.
