I bought a Tivo for the holidays and it needs to connect to the internet once a day to download the manual information. The Best Buy guy said I need a router to connect my Tivo and my computer to the same ethernet line since I have DSL and only one outlet on the modem. I tried two different routers and even a neighbor who is good with computers approached us and we couldn't get either of them to work. My first response was to just unplug the ethernet cable from the computer and pull it to the computer once a day. Tivo. It worked, but soon became an uncomfortable routine. So I figured why not make a simple switch so both the computer and the Tivo are connected and I can send a signal to whatever device that needs it. That works great. I just switch the signal to Tivo when it needs to boot and leave it on the computer the rest of the time. Of course, this doesn't work for devices that need to be connected to each other all the time or when two devices need to "talk" to each other. It's way cheaper than a router!
