You must hold the corn level and slide the corn onto the cob while pulling the zipper. It's easy to use once you've made your first corn on the cob. I wish I had bought years ago. It makes very little mess and it's easy. When we have fresh corn, my husband automatically sets the table with this tool. We all use it when we don't want to eat off the cob. The best money I've ever spent. I wouldn't recommend it for kids as it's very spicy.
