I was taking a trip for over a week that involved spending almost all day outside in cold weather. (30s - low 40s) So I bought this hat and used it most of the time. From a heat retention perspective it worked very well and it even stood up well to some light rain that came down on a few occasions.The warmth of course comes with a tradeoff as it is bulkier and the fold down ears while they do work are not as good as dedicated earmuffs/ear warmers. I paired this with a scarf and the two together worked well and I did not need to use the ear flaps except once or twice.
