They were for an elderly relative whose heart is weak and not pumping enough to maintain good circulation in the feet. The result is fluid accumulation and swelling. I use gentle compression while she sleeps. It works by pushing fluid back up the leg, which is also assisted by gravity. Gravity itself doesn't work either. During the day I only use the straps to change the pressure points depending on the swelling. It is important not to wear them for too long in such a patient. However, they need natural circulation.
