My Craftsman drill came with Nickel Cadmium batteries and a charger. These are nickel metal hydride batteries. An internet search says it's possible to charge them with a NiCad charger, but I haven't taken them to a place where they need charging yet. I can't give a realistic assessment of the lifespan or durability or the price-performance ratio because I haven't used it enough yet. They come loaded and I can say that my drill ran on the old ones like an exhausted snail, and flew away from a bad spot like a broken one with a spare. Something else; I was confused about the number of batteries I would receive with the order. you get two I ordered two packs and ended up with four batteries.
