Since the beginning of the pandemic, I have become more concerned about the air quality in my home. I've had the opportunity to use several Dyson air purifiers over the past few years, as well as some other less expensive ones, and I can use these as a basis for comparison. This Shark HE601 Air Purifier 6 air purifier is quite large. It comes in a relatively plain brown box that includes an air purifier (with a filter pre-installed), a remote control, and a piece of paper with a quick start guide. A full user manual is not included, but the QR code sticker is on the top of the air purifier. You can scan it with any modern smartphone to go to a website with a manual, links to accessories, and other information. Setting up the air purifier is very simple. Remove the plastic tab from the remote control, open the back of the air purifier and remove the filter sealed in plastic, remove the plastic wrap, insert the filter. plug in and turn on. Very easy. The cleaner has a really nice screen on the top of the device as well as on the front of the device. The front one is great because if you are across the room you can still see it. There are several options on the screen, but the main idea is that it shows you the air quality using colored lights: red - bad, orange - fair, blue - good. Both the top of the device and the side of the device have this colored ring that makes it very easy to see the air quality from anywhere in the room. A % number is displayed inside the ring to indicate the air quality - 100% is the best. You can toggle what's shown in the colored ring and instead show "cleaning time" (e.g. 60 minutes) or some other different numbers about how much fine dust in the air is detected. The default % is sufficient for me. Aside from the aforementioned "Air Info" toggle, the only other controls are toggling Auto mode on or off, manually adjusting the fan speed, setting a timer, and checking filter life. The cleaner is relatively quiet during operation and appears to be fast and efficient. Overall this is a really simple, easy to use device, looks good and I like the very simple visual air quality indicator that you can see anywhere. Room. For the things I don't like: - It's not smart, it doesn't have app integration, it doesn't integrate with smart home assistants, no voice control, etc. There are cleaners out there that cost 1/4 the price Therefore. have such features and can show you graphs showing how air quality has changed over time, show information about allergens in your area, etc. These features may not be important to you, but if they are, it is almost shocking that an air purifier exists in this price range doesn't have any of these features s. - When it's 100% clean the fan never turns off unless you turn off the entire unit. He's always working. You can hear it on the lowest setting. I have hearing loss and can clearly hear how it works when there is no extraneous ambient noise in the room. Other air purifiers I've used turn off automatically after cleaning the air. Maybe it could be a "trait" of it cleaning better and better? But I was more concerned that it just never turns itself off. - Expensive filters/maintenance. The filter life is 4400 hours when the device is first started. that's about 6 months. The device detects a reduction in filter life even with 100% clean air. I was looking for replacement filters and found 3 options on the Shark website ranging in price from $90-$110 per filter. If you choose $110, it will cost you $18 per month. If you have several of these to clean the whole house, it can get pretty expensive. I've had no luck with my Dyson cleaners but I've had filters in them that have lasted over a year because the units don't run all the time when they run automatically, they only run when needed. and there are also general filter options. - Cannot be used effectively as a room fan as the air is blown out at the sides of the unit. Maybe good, but just an observation. I raised the score a bit, but overall I'm happy with the device despite the shortcomings. Smart integration is something I love about my other purifiers, but never use. It seems to be doing a great job of cleaning the air. I hope there will be some universal filters to reduce the running costs a bit.
