I bought this for my girlfriend because the apples and pears they serve in my college cafeteria usually have a very thick skin of wax which we find uncomfortable. I was looking for a peeler with a blade guard so she could always carry it in her backpack. The sliding mechanism works well and locks the blade securely in place. It also retracts well, keeping the blade safe and clean when stored. It's good for what she uses it for, but not powerful enough to use every day or for a lot of fruit/veg. I'm not disappointed at all and recommend it for what it is.
