You need the physical activity and mental stimulation that comes with scratching, and a suitable surface to do it. I need something cheap enough that I can just throw it away after the cats are adopted. They are flawless in every way imaginable. They last a long time and when I feel like they need more support I sometimes sprinkle them with catnip.
