So, the smell is not bad, just STRONG. The smell goes away pretty quickly, which is good. I smell like cake or cookie dough. The problem with the smell is that it doesn't go well with other hair products and the combination smells are bad. For the price it will NOT last long. I have hair just below my shoulders and it's very thin and I have to use about 10-15 sprays and you can tell the bottle's contents are gone after each use. So this bottle is enough for 3 showers a week for about a month. The detangling results are good. My kids hair turns into dry strands and rat nests and can be difficult to pull out without hurting unless I use it on their wet hair. Fortunately, that doesn't happen often. As far as softening goes, it works about the same as most products in the $7-$15 price range. But I want wow 5* For the price/smell/quantity and the result I won't buy again. I gave 4* because it's decent but as I won't be buying it again it's losing a star. I am looking for a product that I will continue to buy to give me 5*
