The battery that controls the tail corrodes.
About every few months the tail stops working. The lower battery that controls the tail is corroded. The same thing happens with my mother. The clock keeps running and that battery is fine, but the rear battery keeps corroding. I solve the problem by throwing that battery away and cleaning the battery compartment with a cotton swab and rubbing alcohol. As soon as I put a new battery in after cleaning, the tail moves for several months before it happens again.
