They didn't seem to test or test the scroll wheel/middle button at all on my refurbished device. The wheel was off center and accidentally pressed and jammed. A closer look also revealed obvious scratches on the sides of the scroll wheel, possibly from a previous owner trying to fix it. Reading the reviews of the new model, it seems that it is usually stiff and difficult to put down. There are also a number of issues with the scroll wheel/middle button, so don't worry about replacing it.
