I'm a big fan of Arts & Crafts architecture. I made pilgrimages to the Gamble House in Pasadena and the William Morris Museum in London. I have collected books on crafts, textiles, bungalows and more. As I also love needlework (although my major is quilting), how can I resist a book on embroidery in the same genre? Well, for a couple of years I _could_ because I'm new. On the other hand, I found a copy of Beth Russell's "Arts and Crafts" for sale and thought I could use it as "inspiration" even if I wasn't. I will not use any of their work (handmade work without pre-printed patterns might scare me). I already knew her work is beautifully framed; During this trip to London, I bought a 6 inch version of her Morris embroidery kit "Strawberry Thief". big surprise, this book is a better introduction than i expected. I haven't actually done any of the projects so I may speak with undue confidence but their instructional photos make it clear how to build a tent. The stitch and instructions for the "frame attachment" got me halfway hanging this old project on the wall. I'm not promising to look at any of these projects, but Russell makes me *wish* Your Arts & Crafts idea was primarily developed by William Morris along with William de Morgan and their contemporaries. Among them aren't many American followers of the movement (like Greene & Greene, although there is a design inspired by Tiffany windows), but that's okay because their stuff is beautiful. The materials list includes everything you will need for the project (#20 tapestry needles, 14 canvas, Appleton Creeel yarn: Light Teal (641) 1 skein), and the "sewing order" indicates a few things to keep in mind. for("You will notice that there is room for seven lines"). This is a wonderful book. Obviously, it's more than adequate for any embroidery fanatic, but anyone interested in the Arts and Crafts movement will enjoy this book. This is a wonderful book.
