A year and a half ago I bought an HP Officejet Pro 8500 Multifunction Desktop Inkjet Printer. I have no school-age children and print primarily for work. So I used the printer sparingly. I've learned that the ink dries when I need it! And a full set of HP 940 cartridges costs about $85! Shame on you HP! I read somewhere that inkjet fluid is the most expensive substance in the world per ounce. It's even more valuable than gold! I've tried researching ways to refill cartridges but haven't found a good or reliable way. I decided that I no longer needed HP to give me cartridges, so I searched the internet for information and it turned out that the cheapest way was to just get photo prints from various local or online shops and then my home supplies to print by laser. . Printer. Then I tried to research wireless laser printers. I know HP as HP will still try to cheat me with toner and in fact the toner for this printer is expensive. So I decided that one of my criteria for my new printer is that I can find an easy way to refill my toner supply or find a well compatible third party toner. And guess what, for this particular printer, Revain offers third-party toners with a 4.5 star rating. A pack of two costs about twenty dollars. TWO TONERS FOR 20 BASES! I was also considering an entry-level Brother Wi-Fi laser printer. It had automatic two-sided printing and I actually liked it better, but it didn't have the highly rated third-party toner. Isn't it sad that the main criteria I had to use was refills or non-branded toners? I bought the 1102w and was pleasantly surprised by its small size. I didn't think about it when I first bought the printer, but I found that this device is also compatible with Apple Air Print. Unfortunately the latest firmware was not installed so I had to download the firmware update utility from the HP website. And I had to remove the printer as a wireless printer and add it back as a wired printer because I read online that you can't update the firmware over the air. But after updating the firmware I was able to print from my iOS devices. That's a nice bonus. We're an Apple household and I knew from other reviews that HP hadn't documented wireless printing very well (on OS X). Luckily, I just followed the steps in R. Ruiz's October 30, 2010 Revain review "Bohemian Bon Vivant" and was able to quickly set up wireless printing in OS X Snow Leopard. I'm not sure if this works for OS X Lion. Overall, the HP 1102w is an affordable wireless printer with excellent (and cheap) third-party toner.
