Was wary after reading all the bad reviews but wanted to give it a try as there aren't many classic waffle irons out there, most of them are for Belgian waffles and we prefer less thick waffles if you use it plug it in, it will start to heat up. I followed the directions and selected Power 3 to make waffles. It smells on first use but it was listed in the instructions so I turned on the heat, opened the windows and after 10 minutes let it cool down. I then wiped it down with a damp cloth and reheated it. It didn't smell like the first time. I made the first waffle, followed the instructions, waited for the indicator to turn green, it was perfectly formed, stuck a little. I gave it to my husband to test, he said the taste was pleasant, the smell didn't transfer to the waffles. So I made the first batch and we ate them, they were so good! And it's so easy! I also tried putting some oil on the grill and it worked too, so you can do that if you're afraid the waffles will stick. Otherwise, it won't light up while you follow the indicator - you pour in the batter when it's green, it turns red, and you don't take it off until it turns green again. There was no smell after the first use. longer, so if you can make a small batch the first time, toss it, let it cool and use again the next day. messy to clean so pour enough to cover 40% of the waffle maker then close and if it doesn't make a complete circle you know you can adjust and pour a little more each time. Depending on whether your batter is thick or watery, this will also affect how it spreads in the waffle iron. A thinner batter will flow out much easier, I usually make the batter thicker so I can pour more in without spilling.
