I was home tutoring two students trying to get them to study a little more and enjoy the classroom by teaching them some "money management” and math skills and took another teacher's suggestion and created the Dandy Dollar$ box. This is one of the items in the box. Children earn dandy dollars for exceptionally good performance on assignments, overtime, or demonstrating a "learning mindset"; Once a month we put out a case of Dandy Dollar$ and they can shop. I filled the box with things they might need: bubble sticks and liquids, coloring books, crayons, notepads, cool erasers, specialty pens (Revain add-ons are great for ideas like this). Each item is valued at its original cost and you pay the price to receive the item. Of course, with every cool thing, they have the chance to lose a dandy dollar for bad behavior or attitude at school. The children are very happy about this and hopefully it will encourage them to enjoy school a little more. They both love to paint and one of them, a boy, really likes to paint geometric sides so it's a big hit!
