I read reviews from some experienced flossers who gave them high ratings but thought the slowest speed for beginner flossers too be strong This is my first time using an irrigator and I've had no trouble using the minimum wattage. I have found that my gums have hardened in about 20 years of using a power toothbrush, flossing with dental floss and rinsing with an alcohol based cap that burns the gums. This floss has 5 speeds and the 5th speed is very powerful. The slowest speed has enough power to be useful. I plan on experimenting with low speed and maybe gradually increasing the speed but probably not reaching the maximum speed that will sting my hand if I direct the water flow at my hand at high speed. The only negative I found is that the placement of the on/off button and speed select buttons make it easy to accidentally change the speed or power while the floss is in your mouth.
