This sharpens better than anything I've tried and I've tried quite a few sharpeners and sent my knives in for sharpening with mediocre results. Was it about four years ago (during that time the power went out while I was using it; I went away for about eight hours only to come back to find that most of the time I was gone it was "dragging" " - no problem. It's still ticking). It has a Cooking Illustrated Award for "Best Sharpener" (or whatever their test kitchen is now called). It is an effective and long-lasting product.
