This is an initial review of the GemRed 82418 Digital level.I wanted a digital level after being sold on the idea whilst watching youtube videos by "Bad Obsession Motorsport's videos of "Project Binky". I decided not to go with the cheapest one available, and settled on this one due to the quality of the reviews, as well as the IP67 water and dust proof rating. Initial impressions after having it less than a week are very good - it has exceeded my expectations, particularly in the area of quality of construction. An understated wwhite shipping box, with black and red lettering and an engineering style picture of the level opens to reveal a plastic-and-cardboard-insert type package which opens without the need for a knife (so much better than the sealed-to-within-an-inch-of-its-life alternative!)The package contains the basics - the level (encased in bubblewrap), a basic nylon storage case/sleeve, an instruction sheet (mine was stuffed into the nylon sleeve), and three cheapo AAA batteries. My level is silver in color, and not blue as shown in the image above, not that I'm bothered. It has a good weight in the hand, and feels like it is well made. The end caps are rubberized, and will help protect the level in the event of it being dropped - something which is likely to happen as the magnet in the base is not strong enough to support the weight of the level reliably (more on that later).Getting the level working is as simple as unscrewing the small round cap on the end, sliding the three batteries in (using the diagram on the level to confirm orientation), and watching the screen to see it power up.The instruction sheet is in decently worded English, as opposed to the cryptically coy and semi-incomprehensible versions you will get with a lot of stuff manufactured in China (as this is). It outlines basic functions, major features, how to use those features, and how to calibrate the level if you need to. Whilst there is the odd spelling mistake, and the odd missing word, it is perfectly adequate and covers all the basic functions (that I can see) in a single page. even if the cardboard insert does describe the rubberized end caps as being "anti-falling".Now about the troublesome magnet. Why would you include such a thing in the device unless it was to allow you to stick the level to a magnetic surface and let go of it? I think the problem is due to the magnet being inside the (aluminum?) housing and hence not able to stick directly to the surface in question. The window next to my desk has a metal frame, and when I apply the level to the side of the frame, with it pointing vertically up and down, it makes a quiet clink as it weakly attaches itself to the frame, but will slide down the frame until it catches on an imperfection in the paint (possibly) and holds itself ready, waiting to fall when you aren't paying attention. Try sticking it to the underside of a metal pipe, and it may or may not hang there, again probably until you are looking the other way and it can fall to the ground at the most inopportune time. Remember that this is water and dustproof, but not impact resistant (although those "anti-falling" rubberized end caps will help a little).I have yet to test the waterproof rating - IP67 certifies that the level should survive for up to 30 mins at a depth of less than one meter in still (not running) water. I'm tempted to do so - if it fails, I will be returning it and can look for one with a decent magnet. If it does survive, maybe I will keep it and look to get another one when I really need one that will stick better.Overall, I think I like this product - mainly due to the perceived build quality in my hand, and will update this review if I see any reason to change that.
