After getting used to running in a stable shoe like the Brooks Adrenaline, I was a little wary of switching to something less stable and with almost no slippage. However, most running shoes offer this. I've improved my goal a lot and according to the shop that did the analysis of the goal, I no longer need stable shoes. Still, I wanted to get something a little more similar to what I'm used to. I did a little research and the Asics Gel-Kahana 8 is a slight step up from the standard zero drop shoe, less stable but retains the feel of a road cycling shoe. However, I was a bit nervous before I bought Asics. I don't want to sound like a shoe snob, but after spending a lot of money on running shoes, I found it hard to believe that the shoes cost under $100 and can be found at your average sporting goods store and even some shoe stores actually are good shoes. Today I went on a 7 mile mix road and technical trail run. From the moment I put them on the heel they became terribly snuggly and I was afraid they would rub on the back of the heel. I really thought it was a bad review. Although I really didn't notice it after a mile or so of running. Maybe there was a very short menstrual break. The shoes are a little lighter than my Brooks in terms of specs but feel a little heavier. Although they were a bit heavier, they certainly gave more power and I felt really springy in my stride. I especially felt the spring in my toes as I pushed off. I don't know where they put the "gel" in the gel kahana but if I had to guess it would be in my toes. The fact that they are more stable than regular shoes really helped on the technical side of the trail. If I wasn't looking and hit a few rocks or roots wrong, I felt like they completely kept me from hurting my ankle even a little bit. Grip on slippery surfaces seems a little better than my regular shoes but not great, still I'm not an expert on trail running shoes. Shoes: 8/10 Feeling of weight on feet: 6/10 Overall: 9/10 Overall, if you're a road runner who wants to hit the trails and need a shoe that can handle both, I recommend the Asics Gel-Kahana 8th.
