This is a nice, well designed device that does its job well. It outputs beautifully clear and artifact-free analog audio from a variety of codecs and resolutions. It lacks aesthetics, however, which keeps it from a 5-star rating. 1) The smooth rounded brushed aluminum body has a beautiful appearance, and the volume control has a firm and positive resistance when in use. The device has a look and build quality. However, because the device is so small and light, it just slides across the table with every tweak of the volume/level control. It's cheap, yes. but the solution to this problem would be easy and cheap to solve, by adding a kind of stick with rubber legs. 2) The owner's brochure recommends turning the unit off when not in use, and yet it has NO power switch! It just amazes me that they give you that nice volume/level control but don't include an easy on/off position at the base of the rotation. To turn off the device, you must either physically disconnect the micro-USB connection or plug it into a switched power strip via the USB port on the phone charger. Again, nothing fancy, but it annoys me that they want you to turn it off but don't give you an easy way to do it without running cables or using extra hardware. 3) Super bright red LED power indicator. It's just so bright! We're talking about Hal 9000 light. And why? I have to hide the device behind the wireless headphone stand to avoid the glaring Eye of Sauron effect (see image). 4) The next example is more of a nitpick. Love the fact that they give you 2 different analogue outputs (3.5mm on the front and RCA phono jacks on the back). Typically on this type of device, if a volume control is present, one output is a fixed level line output and the other is variable and controlled by the volume/level control. In Neoteck, however, the volume knob controls the level for both outputs. I understand that this can be an advantage for some people, but for others it can cause problems with certain use cases and desktop audio configurations. now. It's nice, that they offer you 2 different paths for digital audio via coaxial and optical. How about turning on the 3rd? Since the hit of this device is its ability to decode multi-channel home theater content as well as standard 2-channel stereo codecs, why not a mini HDMI or USB-C 3.1 port? Adding this type of input will likely increase the price, but for many it will be a welcome addition.
