I like the look of the Cuisinart CPT-640 with its simple controls and no complicated functions that might limit the lifespan of the unit. The problem starts when you first pick it up and realize that the haptic experience is just as bad as the most economical models. The next big problem with the CPT-640 is that the heating wire is only wrapped about 8 1/2 times (see photo), not 14 times more tightly wrapped than the best models. The fewer turns of heating wire, the slower and more unevenly the toast will be toasted. Logically, this is also a way to reduce production costs. I suspect Cuisinart will defend using less heating wire, saying it has less power and is therefore more efficient. I'm for efficiency, but efficiency for whom? Fewer cords come at a price, and that's the amount of time consumers spend in the kitchen. It took 2 minutes and 21 seconds to cook a piece of sourdough and as you can see in the photo it wasn't very dark nor evenly toasted. The affordable $25 model roasts just as evenly and quickly, if not faster and more evenly, than the Cuisinart CPT-640. Bottom line: If you're looking for an above-average toaster, this is definitely not the one. Because it looks good and makes toast (albeit unevenly), I gave it two stars.
