We installed them on three monitors and - on the third - I got the technique right. Apply it very slowly, starting at a corner. Smooth out the bubbles while walking diagonally across the screen. If there is a bubble, make a backup copy so you can get rid of it. This takes time, but I've found this to be the only way to get almost no blisters. Even on monitors where we had bubbles, our eyes noticed the results immediately, with a huge reduction in glare and reflections. I had no idea how strained my eyes were. One of our monitors is slightly larger than a sheet of plastic, so there is about 1/4 inch clearance on the sides and bottom. It doesn't seem to cause any problems.
