Review on Verbatim 4.7GB 8X DataLifePlus Shiny Silver Silk Screen Printable DVD-R - Pack of 50 in Spindle by Mike Robinson

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Not for use in 1x/2x drives, but generally very good

After "burning" a large chunk of this spindle I had no more frisbees. They all burned well except for the top slice (see note below). I've used them on both Mac OS X 10.4.11 and Windows XP Professional. I've made simple drag-and-drop copies, burned disk image files and ISO images, and used them with Data Backup 3. I used a Samsung SE-S084D portable drive, which is very demanding for the hard drive used. This is a very experienced coaster maker! Even Samsung didn't break drives. (It's on their list of acceptable brands) I haven't tried them in a video DVD burner as I can't get near the burner we have at home. For the record, I'm not allowed to touch the thermostat, the washing machine, the vacuum cleaner, or anything that's painted white. (I agree!) Some people have noticed that it's sometimes difficult to tell the top from the bottom because they're shiny silver. When fresh, the bottom had a distinct bluish cast and there was a (small) engraved inscription next to the spindle hole. If you're looking at the blue side and the lettering is right side up, look down. After firing, the bottom is very different from the top. But. I don't have very good eyesight so if I don't want to mark the disc I make a dot with a water based marker. The lid of the container closes tightly. (I've had a few that didn't. Grab it by the lid and cheers!) Also, the top disc was automatically junk as there was glue on the foam ring and marks on the disc. I didn't want to risk ruining my drive, so I reworked it. I've read a few articles agonizing test rides and they've done great on every test I've read. Some have even simulated hard drive aging, so I'm confident that my data will be retained for a reasonable period of time. the disc or media may become damaged. Will I buy them again? So far I'd say I wouldn't hesitate. It's nice to have a good brand of clean media. God knows I have a collection of dead DVDs already. (But they work great, hanging above my garden from ropes reflecting sunlight to attract vegetable eating birds, rabbits, etc. They seem to love them!)

Pros
  • Read compatibility with most DVD-ROM drives and DVD players
Cons
  • Ratio set
