Review on Onyx Universal Smartphone Mount Holder by Nicholas Reggae

Revainrating 2 out of 5

What I was looking for - Good customer service

UPDATED Rating September 21, 2015: REDUCED to 2 Stars. I would NOT buy this product again. About 3 months into using this product, my fears that spring loaded arms might break came true. The springs simply failed and the levers stayed in the deployed position (both levers). They didn't close even when the locking button on the back was activated. I ended up using duct tape to tie my hands in place so I could still put my phone in and the padding was just enough to keep the phone in place. It was broken like that for about 6 months. I have not contacted customer service - and I have not contacted Revain customer service. Second, I briefly borrowed my brother's Honda CR-Z and when I tried to use the mount in his car, the vents were too thick for the mount to snag in place. (His car has thicker vertical bars than mine.) Keep in mind that the mount doesn't fit all car vents. Third, about 2 weeks ago, after a bump in the road (not a serious minor bump, or maybe a medium bump), the mount completely surprised me while driving by completely falling apart into different components! My cell phone fell on the passenger floor. It was while driving! On the highway! Luckily my phone was connected to the charging cable and not damaged. After I finally parked the car, I noticed that somehow the center piece that connects the bleeder hook to the main component had completely detached from the bleeder hook component, and then the main component from the center piece. So the vent hook was still attached to the vent - and the bracket was 2 pieces. I put it back together - I thought - but the next day it happened again! And the bump wasn't that bad (less than the first time)! I reassembled the bracket. About 10 days have passed since then. If it falls apart again while driving, the mount will be thrown in the bin. I CAN NO LONGER RECOMMEND THIS PRODUCT. First Review: About me: Female -> 35 years old I have an iPhone 5 - regular/slim phone case - drive a 2008 Honda Fit. The ventilation hole is made in the "Cross-Style" style - narrow horizontal slats with vertical slats immediately behind the horizontal slats. Freeway (minimum 60 miles per hour). This clip is pretty much what I was looking for in a cell phone vent clip. My car vent is a little recessed and out of my reach while driving (I'm short). I would like a clip that slides out of the vent for better access to the phone and a better view. 1) The ventilation clip is made of metal and is hooked into the horizontal ventilation bar from below. The spring is easy to push back to lock. I find it easy to connect to my horizontal air outlet. I didn't try to film it, so I can't comment on that. 2) The "legs" for the air vent clamp fit perfectly over my car's air vent - resting on a hard surface. However, it's quite large (wide and falls down) so depending on your vehicle and vent, it may not fit or you may not like the way it lies. It is not possible to remove or adjust the "feet" for the vent clip piece. 3) The phone holder grips are lightly padded and hold my phone firmly but don't seem to damage or scratch my phone or phone cover. Hands on the spring type mechanism. My arms are a bit uneven - one arm stretches a bit more than the other - but it doesn't seem to affect function - mainly an aesthetic thing - but I've noticed it. Easily insert hands to fix phone. 4) The phone holder has a "Quick Release" button on the back. When you press the button, the levers extend slightly to make removing the phone easier. There is also a "Lock" button on the back if you want to lock the "Quick Release" button and prevent the levers from snapping open or accidentally opening. The arms have not yet opened/opened during driving/use. 5) "Legs" of the phone holder are good. 3 positions: full in - both full out - or one full out and one in - can be adjusted/tilted to access the power or headphone jack from below. You don't have to use the holder's "feet" at all if you don't want to. I use "feet" because I don't want my phone to accidentally fall. 6) I like the 360 degree rotation of the ball. So you can lay your phone on its side or tilt it to get a better view of the screen. The ball/spin can be tightened or loosened as needed. 7) Overall quality seems good and durable/well made. 8) Came with no instructions or parts diagram. But it is easy enough to understand and assemble. 9) It's a bulky vent, so it's not for everyone. Good customer service. The US Postal Service somehow lost the package. I contacted support via Revain/email - quick response - replacement sent immediately.
