This mat is great, keeps feral cats out of my flower and vegetable garden. I also use coyote urine throughout the garden to help. I also discovered that the local raccoon was left outside. I'm buying more product as I really need to protect my corn. This mat is made of hard plastic with vertical plastic spikes. It was easy for me to cut the rug around the flowers. The *set* also includes garden studs to secure the mat to the ground to keep it from moving. There are only a few pins in the set, so I bought some pins to use for weed blocking. The spines do not hurt when touched or even punctured by animals. It's more of a deterrent. I suppose if the animal was big or determined it would still walk across it. I think it might help to distract the squirrels from digging. I'll have to try that. So far the mat has been in the right places (really peed on the parts, I dug up the dirt first and added sweet lime to neutralize the pee). The carpets were 8 days old and I check them daily. No one slipped and I didn't see any poop, pee? I'm assuming that doesn't exist. I'm so glad I bought this! He saved my garden! I recommend it. In fact, today I recommended it to a neighbor and she quickly ran home and ordered some!
