I'm an artist and I use a lot of apps for my phone/tablet. However, I have not used any Apple products or Apple Pencil. It looks like a pencil and has a nib like a power pen, but it's actually capacitive, as are thick eraser nibs. So no software is required. I have a Galaxy Note 4 phone with a SPen pen. I couldn't exactly use those thick rubber pens. This one does a pretty decent job though, except when you try to go really slow it doesn't make straight lines, it wobbles. If you're making quick, straight lines, this is a little better. Or maybe you make straight lines with your finger. I bought one and gave it to a young relative for Christmas (she is also an artist). When her mom saw she was using it, she wanted one too, so I bought her one too. They both seem to be very fond of drawing and writing. I like that once charged it holds that charge for a long time until you turn it off when not in use. It lists 8 hours of use, so it can be a long time between charges if you don't turn it on often. For the money, this is one hell of a drawing tool.
