Review on Professional 360 Spherical VR πŸ“· Camera - Insta360 PRO 8K, Black by Lance Harrison

Needs Work

I bought Insta360 Pro directly from Insta360 before it was available on Revain. I was one of the first. All in all, you can't get this 360Β° photo resolution at a better price. I have several complaints. 1) I think my biggest complaint is that it doesn't know the date or time. Every photo and video I take is tagged 2012 12 31. I have traveled and photographed many media. When I sort it I see that none of them are in any order and everything is labeled as 2012 12 31. Here are some files from last session, PIC_2012_12_31_16_05_44, VID_2012_12_31_16_04_07, VID_2012_12_31_16_07_44. When I rotate multiple sessions over a few days, the files aren't even in chronological order from 2012. All other files can be from any session on any day. It's really tiring to take them apart and figure out what was filmed where. I thought Insta360 would release a firmware update to fix this, but it didn't happen. I contacted support first but never got a solution, it was just a headache. I'm a computer pro and wondering whether there is a missing or faulty battery in this device. For example, the computer motherboard has a CR2032 battery just for this purpose. This problem was a great inconvenience. I'm pretty sure I lost something in the jumble of files. 2) When it first came out, fan noise was always in the records. I suggested that they should let the camera turn on the fan after a period of time. They implemented it in a firmware update. It was a nice feature. Of course, it would have been much better if they just put in the quietest fan in the world, but they didn't. Initially, the new firmware recorded without a fan, then after 15 minutes it turned on the fan, but continued to record. In the latest firmware, they stop recording after 15 minutes. Fan noise is a real quality issue. If you want really good recordings, plan on another clean sounding device (I do). 3) Stitching software now requires you to log into their servers whenever you want to use the software. Not a big fan of it. I just want to install the software on my computer and use it anytime without registering with Insta360. 4) This camera is very picky about media. In one session it likes the memory I'm using and in the next session it doesn't. I've learned to make sure I have 3-5 storage media in case he decides to drop the one I'm using (it's worked well in the past). As I said above, I'm generally happy with the ability to shoot 8k 360 video. I think for the price of this camera my complaints shouldn't be higher. Figuring out which 2012 files are which, fan noise dominating audio, tracking my use of stitching software, and inconsistent media detection are things that should have been addressed before How will this camera go on sale? And what's worse, it had to be decided years later. My next 360 Pro may not be an Insta360. I'll definitely do my homework when I buy it. Here's an example of something I recorded a few weeks ago. It was recorded in 8k and converted to 4k and then posted on YouTube, https://www.youtube. com/watch?v=kL5IrpBrtJ4. As I continue to work with this camera I will try to update this review.

Pros
  • 60% bandwidth reduction for smooth and efficient real-time streaming. By using cubemap projection and H.265 compression, developers can reduce bandwidth requirements by up to 60%.
Cons
  • I don't remember but there was something
